Abortion: I feel shame and guilt

Sexuality   ›   Pregnancy  ›   Abortion: I feel shame and guilt

It's normal to feel shame or guilt about having an abortion: we hear and read a lot about it. But don't inflict that on yourself: your body and your decisions about it are yours alone.

Abortion can be frowned upon because of taboos and beliefs (social, family, religious). You don't have to feel guilty or ashamed: in Quebec, abortion is legal and considered a medical act.

The decision to terminate a pregnancy belongs solely to the pregnant person: perhaps you feel unable to take on the responsibility of a child, perhaps your current life is incompatible with pregnancy, perhaps you do not have the family support necessary to raise a child, perhaps you are pregnant as a result of sexual assault... There are as many reasons as there are people, and the choice to have an abortion must be respected, without judgment.

Every person has the right to control their own body and make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. It's your body, your decision.
