When you’re in love, you want everyone to like your partner as much as you do. But what happens when your family doesn’t like them? Don’t worry, there are several ways to approach the situation.

It may be that your parents or family don’t like your girlfriend or boyfriend. In that case, you might think that they don’t understand you, they don’t respect your choices, or they’re preventing you from experiencing things that are important to you.

Explain what you’re feeling and express your needs to them. Maybe you want to have a romantic relationship you don’t have to hide – to be honest with your family and win your parents’ approval. And listen to what they have to say. Maybe they feel a need to protect you or respect their own values?

Together, find a realistic, negotiable compromise. Be patient. Your family or your parents might need time to get to know your girlfriend or boyfriend. If you like, suggest that they contact your partner’s parents to set some common rules. That might reassure them… and improve things for you!
