External condom
Condoms are the most highly recommended contraceptive because they protect you against STBBIs and unwanted pregnancies. What is it?
Condoms are the most preferred method of contraception as they protect against both unwanted pregnancies and most of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs). The external condom is unrolled around the erect penis before any penetration or any genital or anal contact. It works as protection against unwanted pregnancies by acting as a physical barrier preventing semen from contacting the vagina and vulva. How to Put on a Condom?
Before you do anything, check the date on the wrapper. An expired condom is no longer a reliable means of protection or contraception. Check that the wrapper is intact in order to ensure that the condom inside is undamaged. Avoid opening the wrapper with a sharp object or your teeth, since that could damage the condom.
To put on a condom, start by pinching the tip of it between your thumb and index finger. By doing this, you will create an approximately 2 cm long airless space at the top of the penis. This leaves enough space for semen to collect after ejaculation and helps prevent the condom from tearing. Place the condom on the head of the penis and unroll it down the entire length of the erect penis. You can put on the condom alone or with your partner’s help, as you prefer. A condom can also be used with sex toys in order to prevent the transmission of STBBIs.
Take off the condom immediately after ejaculation, while the penis is still erect. Make sure to keep a hold of the condom’s edge around the base of the penis while withdrawing. That way it won’t slip off when being removed. This will also prevent any semen unintentionally flowing out near the vulva. You should then throw the condom out in the garbage, as it cannot be used again.
Condoms come in various sizes, tastes, and textures. You can try several out to find the one that’s best for you. It’s normal not to know exactly what to do the first time you use one so you can practise by reading the leaflet in the box before your first time using one. If you’re feeling nervous, don’t hesitate to briefly go to the bathroom. You’ll have more privacy to put it on, and the experience may be less stressful. Got Problems with Condoms?
Condoms completely lose their effectiveness once they break, have a hole, or tear during sexual relations. Use a pre-lubricated condom or a personal water-based lubricant (applied on the outside of the condom) to avoid any breakage1. Avoid any oil-based or petroleum jelly-based substances, such as Vaseline or baby oil, as they will damage the latex. If the condom comes off inside your partner, it will not protect them any longer; in such cases, remove the condom as carefully as possible. Condoms : Lots of Advantages, Few Disadvantages!
There’s a reason why condoms are the most widely used method of contraception: they have lots of advantages and very few disadvantages!
👍 Advantages
- They provide good protection against the vast majority of STBBIs.
- They’re easy to get. Condoms are sold in pharmacies, convenience stores, and even in some restaurants and bars. They’re also usually available at your school, at certain community organizations, in clinics, or at youth centres.
- You don’t need a prescription and they’re cheap!
- They are very efficient when used properly (most condom failures are due to improper usage).
- They can be used in sexual games, and some people find that condoms help prolong the duration of their sexual experiences. They provide slightly reduced sensations, which may sometimes delay ejaculation.
👎 Disadvantages
- They should be put on before any sexual activity, and some people don’t like this interruption. On the other hand, others have found pleasant ways to include them in their sexual play.
- It might take away some of the feeling during sex.
- Condoms may degrade if they are left in hot areas, including in your pockets!
- It must be handled with care.
